For more than 30 years, the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts de la Marionnette (ESNAM) has been dedicated to the training of puppeteers as a school at the heart of artistic creation. The great good fortune of this school –the first and only school in France for initial puppeteer training– is being located at the heart of the Institut International de la Marionnette, where research, experimentation, training and artistic education continuously interact. As such, it is nourished by this ongoing reflection on the arts of puppetry, by these exchanges and interactions between disciplines.
Puppetry distinguishes itself from other arts as an artistic discipline in its own right through its polymorphism and a diversity of techniques bestowing it with unparalleled artistic richness.
At the heart of the Institut International de la Marionnette, the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts de la Marionnette (ESNAM) provides high-level initial training by way of a three-year postgraduate curriculum that completes the DNSPC (French qualification – national professional post-graduate degree) with an actor-puppeteer major.
This school is accessible through a competitive entrance examination, makes it possible to benefit from the teaching of French and foreign artists and aims for the mastery of the fundamentals of contemporary puppetry while ensuring the development of a personal artistic language.
The school provides privileged access to a documentation and research centre dedicated to puppetry arts which is the only one of its kind in the world.
Measures for professional integration, the support of an artistic network and personalized guidance allow graduates to be optimally prepared for the professional world.
By decision of the Ministry of Culture and Communication on July 1, 2016, ESNAM is authorized to issue the DNSPC, (Diplôme National Supérieur Professionnel de Comédien) puppeteer-actor speciality.
This level II diploma (Bachelor's degree qualification) validates the acquisition of general and professional knowledge and skills corresponding to the practice of the puppeteer-actor profession, and allows for the continuation of studies for the master's degree.
